The introduction of the New Export System (NES), the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS) and the requirement for advanced cargo information for the enhanced security measures have changed the official documentary procedures, in many cases replacing the paper document with electronic messages. The changes have had an impact on export administration but have not altered the need for exporters to give prompt, precise instructions to all the commercial parties in the international supply chain. This is where the Export Cargo Shipping Instruction (ECSI) can help.
Based on the SITPRO standard, the ECSI is designed to be a multi purpose form fulfiling several functions and giving specific instructions about export services required and responsibility for those charges. It can save exporters time and money and helps to portray a professional image to trade service providers. The document format has not changed since it was launched in 1976 and still serves an important purpose in the management of the physical movement of goods. What has changed is the way the exporter completes the form to give instructions.
Reflecting the new export preparation procedures, the continued importance of the ECSI and to encourage its greater use by the exporting community SITPRO has added an updated Completion Guide for the ECSI to its website at www.sitpro.org.uk/trade/compguides.html.
