The leaky faucet is a common problem in many households and can cause severe damage. But, you don’t have to be an expert to repair a faucet. Considering the plumbing services are costly, with a couple of steps, you can learn to fix this problem and avoid any significant damage. The sound of a dripping faucet can be pretty irritating. If you delay this repair, then imagine how much water you are wasting. But, this problem can be solved quickly and even the amateurs can tackle it.
Before you start
There are a couple of things you should do before you begin this process. First of all, shut off the water under the sink. If you fail to shut your water down, then you may cause a flood and ruin your appliances. Close the sink drain, cover it with a rag to catch the dropped parts. Another useful trick, you can use tape and cover the jaws of your wrench to avoid scratching the fixtures. Prepare a bin where you can dispose the parts you removed from the faucet and use vinegar and soft pads to clean off the mineral deposits. This way, the new faucet will last longer.
Find the type
There are four types of faucets: compression, cartage, ceramic disk and ball one. Expect for compression faucet which relies on rubber; the other types are often called waterless faucets. They last longer, but that doesn’t stop them from leaking. When they leak, you can either replace O-ring or neoprene seal that is causing this problem, and it will cost you less than $20.
In most cases, they require new seat washers. So here is what to do:
Remove the decorative cap and handle screw.
Use a crescent wrench to unscrew the packing nut.
Once you complete this task, remove and replace the seat washer that is secured by the brass screw.
You should coat the washers in plumber’s oil, then pop the seat out of the packing nut and change the O-ring.
O-rings come in various sizes, so make sure to match your size.
Ball faucet contains a lot of parts, so for average people, who aren’t professionals, may be challenging to find the cause of the leak. To avoid any further aggravation, you can just buy the replacement kit and put all new parts. But to use the package, you need to remove the handle set screw and lift off the handle. Then use appropriate pliers to take off the cap and collar. Utilize the specialized tool included in the faucet-repair kit.
To begin the repair process, you should take off the decorative cap on the handle and remove the screw, tilt the handle back and pull it off. Pay attention to the threaded retaining clip that is holding the cartridge in place. For this, you will have to use needle-nose pliers to remove it and then pull the cartridge straight off. Once you reach the O-ring, use a knife to cut it and after coating new ring in oil, put it in place.
